What are French door grilles?

French door grilles are usually a pair of retractable grilles that fold to each side of the doors and meet in the centre, where they lock together. They protect the glazing and the meeting stiles, which are the weak point of many French doors.

French doors often open outwards, which leaves plenty of room inside for a grille. Two leaves meeting in the middle keep each stack small and let you open one side only if you want to.

Where the doors open inwards, the grille is set back far enough for the doors to swing, or fitted outside on a frame if internal space is tight.

How much do French door grilles cost?

Our guide range is £954 to £2,034 including VAT (£795 to £1,695 plus VAT) per pair of doors, supplied and fitted. The exact figure depends on size, type, finish and locking, and your fixed price is confirmed in writing after the free survey. See all grille prices.

What to decide before you order

Door swing

Inward-opening doors need the grille set back far enough to clear the leaves.

One side or both

A centre-meeting pair lets you open one side for everyday use.

Curtains and blinds

Stack positions are planned around curtain tracks and returns.

Upper floors

A grille behind Juliet balcony doors needs to keep any required escape route usable.

Rules across the UK

The rules on planning, listed buildings and fire safety differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are the points most relevant to French door grilles; local pages show the version for your nation.

England (similar principles apply in Wales, Scotland and NI)

Grilles inside the glass

A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character, which can include internal grilles and their fixings. In conservation areas, councils look closely at anything fitted to the outside. We recommend speaking to the council's conservation officer before ordering.

Bedroom and escape windows

Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.

French door grilles: questions

How much do French door grilles cost?

A pair of retractable grilles for French doors usually costs between £795 and £1,695 plus VAT (£954 to £2,034 inc VAT) supplied and fitted.

Can French door grilles open one side only?

Yes. Each leaf runs independently, so you can open one side and leave the other closed.

Do French door grilles need a floor track?

Usually a low-profile one, which keeps the grille rigid and is easy to step over.

My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?

Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.

Will the grille match my doors?

We powder-coat grilles in white, black, anthracite or a RAL colour close to your frames.

How long does it take to fit?

Usually two to three hours once the grilles arrive.
