What are LPS 1175 certified security grilles?
LPS 1175 certified security grilles are products that a manufacturer has had independently tested and certified by the Loss Prevention Certification Board against the LPS 1175 standard. The rating tells you which tools the grille resisted and for how long, which is what many insurers and specifiers ask for.
LPS 1175 is published by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB, part of BRE). Under Issue 8 a rating is shown as a letter and a number, such as C5: the letter is the threat level, meaning the toolkit used in the attack test, and the number is the delay in minutes the product resisted. Older products may still carry the earlier SR1 to SR8 ratings.
Certification belongs to the manufacturer's tested product, not to the installer. We supply and fit certified grilles from manufacturers who hold the certificate for that product, install them to the manufacturer's instructions, and give you the certificate reference with your quote so you can check it on the LPCB's published list.
How much do LPS 1175 certified security grilles cost?

What to decide before you order
Which rating you need
Start from your insurer's or specifier's requirement rather than choosing the highest number.
Certified product, not certified installer
The certificate covers the manufacturer's tested product. Check the certificate reference against the LPCB's listing.
Installation
A certified grille only performs as tested if it is fixed into a suitable structure as the manufacturer specifies.
Cost and weight
Higher ratings mean heavier, more expensive grilles that need stronger fixing points.
Rules across the UK
The rules on planning, listed buildings and fire safety differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are the points most relevant to LPS 1175 certified security grilles; local pages show the version for your nation.
Insurer requirements
Insurers set their own conditions for business premises, stock and cash. If your policy names a type or rating of grille, get the wording in writing before ordering; the insurer decides whether a product meets it.
Grilles across exits in business premises
In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.

LPS 1175 certified security grilles: questions
What does LPS 1175 mean?
It is a security standard published by the Loss Prevention Certification Board. Products are attack-tested and certified to a rating showing the toolkit they resisted and for how long.
What do ratings like C5 or SR3 mean?
Under Issue 8 the letter is the threat level (the toolkit) and the number is the minutes of delay. SR1 to SR8 is the older scale; for example SR2 roughly corresponds to B3 and SR3 to C5.
Are you LPS 1175 certified?
No. Certification is held by the manufacturer for the tested product. We supply and install certified products and give you the manufacturer's certificate reference.
How much do LPS 1175 grilles cost?
Typically between £1,495 and £5,995 plus VAT (£1,794 to £7,194 inc VAT) per opening supplied and fitted, depending on the rating, size and format.
Does my insurer need LPS 1175?
Only your insurer can say. Send us their wording and we will quote products that match it.
Can an existing grille be certified?
No. Certification applies to manufactured products that have been tested; an existing uncertified grille cannot be upgraded to a rating.
