Shopfront grilles or roller shutters: which is better?

Comparing internal lattice grilles, open-mesh roller grilles and solid shutters for shops.

Shopping centre unit closed with an open-mesh roller grille

The short answer

For most high-street shops an internal open-lattice grille is the better balance: it protects the glass line, keeps the display visible and rarely needs planning permission. Solid external shutters give a stronger physical barrier but usually need consent and can deaden the street.

What does each option do best?

  • Internal retractable grille: keeps displays visible, sits behind the glass, folds to the side
  • Internal roller grille: open mesh, nothing at the sides, needs head space for the coil
  • External solid shutter: protects the glass itself, but usually needs planning permission

Why do councils prefer grilles?

Many councils' shopfront guides say solid shutters create dead frontages after dark and attract graffiti. See-through internal security keeps the street lit and overlooked, which also helps natural surveillance.

Does a grille protect the glass?

An internal grille does not stop the glass being broken, but it stops entry through it. If glass damage is your main problem, laminated glazing alongside an internal grille is often a better answer than an external shutter.

Which is better for insurance?

That depends on your insurer. Some specify shutters, some accept grilles, and some specify a certified rating. Get the requirement in writing before choosing.
