Retractable, fixed or removable: which grille do I need?

How the three main grille types differ, where each makes sense, and the mistakes to avoid.

The short answer

Choose a retractable grille for openings you use every day, a fixed grille for windows that never open and are not needed for escape, and a removable grille for openings you only need to secure some of the time.

How does a retractable grille work?

A retractable grille is a lattice of vertical bars and scissor links running in tracks. It slides across the opening and locks, then folds into a narrow stack at the side. It suits windows and doors used daily, because it can be opened in seconds and leaves the opening fully usable.

When is a fixed grille the right choice?

A fixed grille is a welded frame of bars bolted permanently in place. With no moving parts or lock it is the simplest and most economical option, but it should only go on windows that are never needed for access or escape, such as basement lights, storerooms and plant rooms.

When does a removable grille make sense?

A removable grille is a rigid panel that locks into brackets and lifts out completely. It suits holiday homes, offices closed at weekends and windows you want clear most of the time. Panels need somewhere to be stored and should be light enough for one person to lift.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Fitting fixed bars or key-only grilles over a bedroom or upstairs escape window
  • Choosing a retractable grille with no space beside the opening for the stack
  • Ignoring what the grille is fixed to: a weak reveal makes a strong grille weak
  • Forgetting curtains, handles, radiators and switches that clash with the stack

Can I mix types in one building?

Yes, and most buildings end up with a mix: retractable grilles on doors and everyday windows, fixed grilles on storerooms, and quick-release grilles on bedroom windows.
