What are patio and bifold door grilles?

A patio door grille is a wide retractable grille fitted inside sliding patio or bifold doors. Closed, it protects a large glazed opening that is often out of sight at the back of the house; open, it folds into slim stacks so the view and access are unaffected.

Patio and bifold doors are a weak point simply because of their size and position. A grille behind them means a broken pane or a lifted sash still does not give a way in.

On wide openings we split the grille into leaves that park at one or both sides, choose a low or recessed floor track so you can walk through comfortably, and position the stack where it will not clash with curtains or the door handle.

How much do patio and bifold door grilles cost?

Our guide range is £1,074 to £2,994 including VAT (£895 to £2,495 plus VAT) per set of doors, supplied and fitted. The exact figure depends on size, type, finish and locking, and your fixed price is confirmed in writing after the free survey. See all grille prices.

What to decide before you order

Track

A low-profile track keeps the threshold easy to walk over. Recessed tracks need a little floor work.

Where it parks

Bifold doors stack their own leaves to one side; the grille stack should not fight them.

Colour

Anthracite grilles sit quietly against grey aluminium frames.

Usage

If you open the doors every day, ask for a lighter-action grille with smooth runners.

Rules across the UK

The rules on planning, listed buildings and fire safety differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are the points most relevant to patio and bifold door grilles; local pages show the version for your nation.

England (similar principles apply in Wales, Scotland and NI)

Grilles inside the glass

A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character, which can include internal grilles and their fixings. In conservation areas, councils look closely at anything fitted to the outside. We recommend speaking to the council's conservation officer before ordering.

Bedroom and escape windows

Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.

Patio and bifold door grilles: questions

How much is a grille for patio doors?

Patio and bifold door grilles usually cost between £895 and £2,495 plus VAT (£1,074 to £2,994 inc VAT) supplied and fitted, depending on width, number of leaves and track type.

Will a grille get in the way of my bifold doors?

No. We plan the stack so the bifold leaves and the grille fold to positions that do not clash.

Can I walk over the grille track?

Yes. Low-profile tracks are a few millimetres high, and recessed tracks sit flush with the floor.

Can the grille be fitted outside the patio doors?

It can, but inside is usual because the grille is protected and the outside of the house stays the same.

Do patio grilles block the view?

When open, only a slim stack at each side. When closed, the lattice is open enough to see the garden clearly.

How long does fitting take?

A typical set of patio doors takes half a day once the grille is made.
