What are hinged security gates?
A hinged security gate is a steel bar gate hung on its own welded frame in front of or behind a door. It swings open and closed like a second door and locks with a heavy-duty lock box, making it a strong choice for back doors, plant rooms and service entrances.
Where there is no wall space beside a door for a retractable stack, a hinged gate gives the same protection in a different form. It also suits exits that are used often, because opening a hinged gate is quicker than sliding a long grille.
Gates are made to measure with a perimeter frame fixed into the opening, heavy hinges, and a welded lock box. Single, double and leaf-and-a-half arrangements cover most doorways.
How much do hinged security gates cost?
Our guide range is £834 to £2,034 including VAT (£695 to £1,695 plus VAT) per gate, supplied and fitted. The exact figure depends on size, type, finish and locking, and your fixed price is confirmed in writing after the free survey. See all grille prices.

What to decide before you order
Swing direction
The gate needs clear space to open. We check steps, bins and the door's own swing before deciding which way it hangs.
Mesh infill
Bars alone may let someone reach through to a handle or lock. Mesh infill closes that gap.
Escape route
If the gate is on an exit route, consider escape hardware or a management plan so it is never locked while people are inside.
Finish
External gates last longest when galvanised before powder coating.
Rules across the UK
The rules on planning, listed buildings and fire safety differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are the points most relevant to hinged security gates; local pages show the version for your nation.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character, which can include internal grilles and their fixings. In conservation areas, councils look closely at anything fitted to the outside. We recommend speaking to the council's conservation officer before ordering.
Grilles across exits in business premises
In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.

Hinged security gates: questions
How much does a hinged security gate cost?
Single hinged gates usually cost between £695 and £1,695 plus VAT (£834 to £2,034 inc VAT) supplied and fitted. Double gates, mesh infill and escape hardware add to the price.
Is a hinged gate stronger than a retractable grille?
A well-made hinged gate is very strong because it has a rigid frame and solid bars. Retractable grilles trade a little rigidity for the ability to fold away.
Can hinged gates be fitted outside?
Yes. They are often fitted outside commercial back doors, galvanised and powder-coated for weather resistance.
Can a hinged gate be used on a fire exit?
Only if it does not prevent escape while the building is occupied, for example with push-to-exit hardware or by being unlocked and fixed open during opening hours.
Can you make a double gate?
Yes. Wide doorways can take a pair of gates or one large and one small leaf.
How long do hinged gates take to make?
Each gate is made to measure after the survey. We confirm the lead time with your quote.
