What are bespoke security grilles?
A bespoke security grille is designed and fabricated for one particular opening, such as an arched window, a curved bay, a very large screen or a period building where a standard grille would look wrong. It is measured on site, drawn up and made to suit.
Not every opening suits an off-the-shelf grille. Arched heads, splayed reveals, stone mullions and listed interiors all need a design that respects the building and still gives real security.
We survey, measure and photograph the opening, agree the design and finish, and have the grille fabricated to those dimensions. Decorative bar work, slimmer sections, matched colours and hidden fixings are all possible.
How much do bespoke security grilles cost?
Our guide range is £474 to £3,594 including VAT (£395 to £2,995 plus VAT) per opening, supplied and fitted. The exact figure depends on size, type, finish and locking, and your fixed price is confirmed in writing after the free survey. See all grille prices.

What to decide before you order
Design approval
We agree a drawing showing bar layout, sections and finish before anything is made.
Consents
Listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent; bespoke designs are often how consent is won.
Lead time
Bespoke grilles take longer than standard ones because each is drawn and made individually.
Budget
Decorative work costs more than plain bars. We can price plain and decorative options side by side.
Rules across the UK
The rules on planning, listed buildings and fire safety differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are the points most relevant to bespoke security grilles; local pages show the version for your nation.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character, which can include internal grilles and their fixings. In conservation areas, councils look closely at anything fitted to the outside. We recommend speaking to the council's conservation officer before ordering.
Bedroom and escape windows
Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.

Bespoke security grilles: questions
How much do bespoke grilles cost?
Bespoke grilles range from around £395 plus VAT (£474 inc VAT) for a small shaped window to £2,995 plus VAT (£3,594 inc VAT) or more for large or decorative work. Each is priced from the survey and design.
Can you make a grille for an arched window?
Yes. Fixed and removable grilles can follow the arch exactly, and retractable grilles can be fitted below the springing line with a fixed arched panel above.
Can a grille be designed for a listed building?
Yes. Slim sections, matched colours and minimal fixings help, but listed building consent is still needed for works that affect the building's character.
Can you copy an existing grille design?
We can make a grille in a similar style for a matching window. We do not copy other firms' registered designs.
How long do bespoke grilles take?
Longer than standard grilles because each is drawn and fabricated individually. The lead time is confirmed with the quote.
Can bespoke grilles still be retractable?
Yes, within limits. Retractable grilles need straight tracks, so curved or arched parts are usually fixed.
