What does security grille servicing involve?
Security grille servicing is planned maintenance that keeps grilles running smoothly and locking properly. A service cleans the tracks, lubricates the pivots and runners, checks fixings and alignment, tests the lock and any release mechanism, and records anything that needs attention.
Grilles live in dusty, busy places: shop floors, doorways and windows that collect grit. Over time that grit wears the runners and stiffens the lattice. A short service once or twice a year prevents most breakdowns.
For electrically operated roller grilles, regular maintenance also checks the motor, limits, safety edges and manual override, so the grille stays safe to use.
How much does security grille servicing cost?
Servicing costs £114 to £234 including VAT (£95 to £195 plus VAT) per grille, with a minimum visit charge of £174 including VAT (£145 plus VAT). The price is confirmed before the visit. See all grille prices.
Minimum visit charge £145 + VAT (£174 inc VAT).

What to decide before you order
How often
Daily-use and external grilles benefit from six-monthly visits; light-use internal grilles from yearly.
Escape releases
Grilles with quick-release mechanisms should be checked as part of every service.
Powered grilles
Electric grilles need checks of their safety devices as well as the mechanics.
Records
Service records help with insurers, landlords and fire risk assessments.
Rules across the UK
The rules on planning, listed buildings and fire safety differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are the points most relevant to security grille servicing; local pages show the version for your nation.
Electric roller grilles
Electric grilles need a suitable supply wired to BS 7671. In homes, some electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Powered grilles should have working safety devices and regular maintenance.
Bedroom and escape windows
Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.
Grilles across exits in business premises
In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.
