Listed buildings and conservation areas

Listed buildings in Scotland need listed building consent for works affecting their character, decided by the council, with Historic Environment Scotland consulted on some cases. Conservation areas bring extra scrutiny of external changes. Check with the council before ordering.

Grilles inside the glass

A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission in Scotland, as it does not materially change the outside of the building. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

French door grilles in Edinburgh and the Lothians: questions

Which towns in Edinburgh and the Lothians do you cover?

We can arrange work anywhere in Edinburgh and the Lothians, including Edinburgh, Livingston, Musselburgh, Bathgate and Dalkeith, and in other towns across the area.

My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?

Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.

Will the grille match my doors?

We powder-coat grilles in white, black, anthracite or a RAL colour close to your frames.

Do French door grilles need a floor track?

Usually a low-profile one, which keeps the grille rigid and is easy to step over.
