Rules that apply in England
Grilles in rented homes
Landlords in England must keep rented homes free from serious hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, which includes fire. A grille that stops a tenant using an escape window can create a hazard, so grilles in rented homes should have keyless internal releases.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.
Grilles across exits in business premises
In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.
Security grilles in Bicester: questions
Do you fit security grilles in Bicester?
Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Bicester and the OX26 area.
How much do security grilles cost in Bicester?
Budget £414 to £954 including VAT (£345 to £795 plus VAT) per window for retractable window grilles in Bicester, supplied and fitted. Size, number of leaves, colour and access all move the price, which is fixed in writing after the survey.
Can you survey in Bicester and nearby towns?
Yes. Surveys in Bicester, Oxford, Banbury and elsewhere in Oxfordshire are booked around installer availability.
Do grilles need planning permission?
Internal grilles usually do not. External grilles and shutters on commercial buildings normally do, and listed buildings need consent for works affecting their character.
Can grilles go on bedroom windows?
Yes, with a keyless internal release so the window still works as an escape route.
