Buyer guide

How do I measure a window or door for a security grille?

What to measure for a guide price, what the survey checks, and why depth matters.

Surveyor measuring a window reveal with a tape measure

The short answer

For a guide price, measure the clear width and height inside the reveal at three points each, note the depth of reveal in front of the frame, and take photos. A surveyor then confirms exact sizes, fixing points and stack position before anything is made.

What should I measure for a guide price?

  • Width inside the reveal at the top, middle and bottom: use the smallest
  • Height on the left, centre and right: use the smallest
  • Depth of flat reveal between the frame and the room
  • Anything that projects: handles, restrictors, sills, radiators
  • Which side you would like the grille to fold to

Why does reveal depth matter?

The tracks need a flat surface to fix to, and the folded stack needs space to sit clear of the window handles. Where the frame is flush with the wall, a slim subframe can create the depth needed.

What does the survey add?

The surveyor checks the reveal is square, what the wall is made of, where fixings can go safely, the clearance for handles and curtains, and whether the window is needed for escape. Only then is the grille ordered.

Can I just order a grille to my measurements?

You can, but small errors make grilles bind or leave gaps. Our fixed prices are based on our own survey measurements, so the fit is our responsibility.
