How much should I budget for French door grilles in St Andrews?
As a guide, French door grilles in St Andrews cost £954 to £2,034 including VAT (£795 to £1,695 plus VAT) per pair of doors, supplied and fitted. The exact figure depends on size, type, finish and locking, and is confirmed in writing after the free survey.
French door grilles are usually a pair of retractable grilles that fold to each side of the doors and meet in the centre, where they lock together. They protect the glazing and the meeting stiles, which are the weak point of many French doors.

- Low-profile floor track
- Locks keyed alike with other grilles in the house
- Small stacks at each side of the doors
- Pair of leaves meeting at a central lock

Fife combines Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy's town centres with historic St Andrews and the stone-built villages of the East Neuk.
Where French door grilles are most often used:
- French doors to gardens
- Dining rooms and kitchens
- Juliet balconies on upper floors (with escape in mind)
- Period homes with timber French doors
What to think about first
Upper floors
A grille behind Juliet balcony doors needs to keep any required escape route usable.
Curtains and blinds
Stack positions are planned around curtain tracks and returns.
Consents and safety: Scotland
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission in Scotland, as it does not materially change the outside of the building. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.
Bedroom and escape windows
In Scotland, escape from homes is covered by the Building Standards technical handbooks (section 2, fire). Where a room relies on a window for escape, nothing fitted over it should stop it being used. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a keyless internal release.
