Rules that apply in England
Bedroom and escape windows
Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.
Grilles in rented homes
Landlords in England must keep rented homes free from serious hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, which includes fire. A grille that stops a tenant using an escape window can create a hazard, so grilles in rented homes should have keyless internal releases.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.
Security grilles in Northamptonshire: questions
Do you fit security grilles across Northamptonshire?
We can arrange work anywhere in Northamptonshire, including Northampton, Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough and Rushden, and in other towns across the area.
How much do security grilles cost in Northamptonshire?
As a guide, retractable window grilles cost £345 to £795 plus VAT (£414 to £954 inc VAT), door gates £595 to £1,295 plus VAT (£714 to £1,554 inc VAT) and shopfronts £1,195 to £3,495 plus VAT (£1,434 to £4,194 inc VAT), supplied and fitted. Fixed prices follow a free survey.
Do grilles need planning permission in Northamptonshire?
Usually not for grilles fitted inside the glass. External grilles and shutters on commercial buildings normally need planning permission, and listed buildings may need listed building consent. The rules section on this page has the detail.
Can grilles go on bedroom windows?
Yes, with a keyless internal release so the window still works as an escape route.
Do you hold any accreditations?
We do not claim accreditations we do not hold. Where a certified product is supplied, the certificate belongs to its manufacturer.
