Bespoke security grilles in Sunderland

Bespoke security grilles in Sunderland: what will it cost?

Budget £474 to £3,594 including VAT (£395 to £2,995 plus VAT) per opening for bespoke security grilles in Sunderland, supplied and fitted. Size, number of leaves, colour and access all move the price, which is fixed in writing after the survey.

A bespoke security grille is designed and fabricated for one particular opening, such as an arched window, a curved bay, a very large screen or a period building where a standard grille would look wrong. It is measured on site, drawn up and made to suit.

Retractable, fixed, removable or hinged in bespoke shapes
Hidden or discreet fixings
Very large or multi-section screens
Any RAL colour, galvanised or both

Getting the right bespoke grille for your building

Lead time

Bespoke grilles take longer than standard ones because each is drawn and made individually.

Consents

Listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent; bespoke designs are often how consent is won.

What the rules say in England

England

Bedroom and escape windows

Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.

External grilles and planning

External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.

Bespoke security grilles in Sunderland: questions

Do you cover Seaham as well as Sunderland?

Yes. As well as Sunderland, we can arrange surveys in nearby Seaham, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring, and elsewhere in Tyne and Wear.

Can you make a grille for an arched window?

Yes. Fixed and removable grilles can follow the arch exactly, and retractable grilles can be fitted below the springing line with a fixed arched panel above.

Can a grille be designed for a listed building?

Yes. Slim sections, matched colours and minimal fixings help, but listed building consent is still needed for works that affect the building's character.

Can bespoke grilles still be retractable?

Yes, within limits. Retractable grilles need straight tracks, so curved or arched parts are usually fixed.
