Smethwick is about 3 miles from Birmingham, the main centre for West Midlands. We can arrange visits across the B66 district and in nearby places such as West Bromwich and Birmingham.
The West Midlands is dominated by red-brick terraces and interwar semis, with dense high streets and a large stock of industrial and trade units.
This work suits:
- Old grilles in rented or newly bought properties
- Grilles with lost or broken keys
- Roller grilles that will not open or close
- Grilles damaged in an attempted break-in
Before the visit
Repair or replace
If the frame is sound, repair is usually best. Heavily corroded or badly bent grilles are often better replaced.
Make it safe first
After a break-in attempt, the first priority is making the opening secure.
Planning and safety in England
Electric roller grilles
Electric grilles need a suitable supply wired to BS 7671. In homes, some electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Powered grilles should have working safety devices and regular maintenance.
Grilles across exits in business premises
In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.
