A retractable security grille is a steel or aluminium lattice of vertical bars joined by scissor links that runs in a top and bottom track. Drawn across a window or door it forms a locked barrier; slid back, it folds into a narrow stack at the side so the opening is fully usable.

Fitting in Scunthorpe and nearby

Scunthorpe is about 25 miles from Lincoln, the main centre for Lincolnshire. We can survey and fit across the DN15 district and in nearby places such as Goole and Gainsborough.

Lincolnshire combines the historic hilltop core of Lincoln with Grimsby and Scunthorpe's industrial terraces and many small market and coastal towns.

Typical places for this kind of grille include:

Office receptions and glazed partitions
Stockrooms and cash offices
Shop windows and glazed shop entrances
Ground-floor windows of homes and flats

Things to decide before you order

Inside or outside the glass

Inside is the norm: it is protected from weather, keeps the street view unchanged and usually avoids planning issues. Outside fitting suits recessed doorways and openings with no internal depth.

Which side it folds to

The stack needs a clear wall or reveal to park against. We check curtains, handles, radiators and light switches before the grille is ordered.

Rules that apply in England

England

Bedroom and escape windows

Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.

Grilles inside the glass

A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

Made to measure and fitted

Retractable security grilles in Scunthorpe: questions

Which areas near Scunthorpe do you cover?

We can arrange work in Scunthorpe and in nearby Goole (13 miles), Gainsborough (14 miles) and Hull (17 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

How long does a retractable grille take to fit?

Most single windows or doors are fitted in an hour or two once the made-to-measure grille arrives. A shopfront or several openings may take a day.

Do retractable grilles need a bottom track?

Most do, because the bottom track stops the grille being pushed out of line. On doorways a low or recessed track can be used to reduce the trip hazard, and some top-hung designs work without one on smaller openings.

Can a retractable grille be fitted inside the window?

Yes, and that is how most are fitted. The tracks fix into the window reveal or to a timber or steel subframe, so the grille sits between the glass and the room.
