Fitting in Shrewsbury and nearby

Shrewsbury is about 13 miles from Telford, the main centre for Shropshire. We can survey and fit across the SY1 district and in nearby places such as Wellington and Telford.

Shropshire mixes Telford's modern estates and business units with timber-framed and listed centres in Shrewsbury and Ludlow.

Typical places for this kind of grille include:

Flats with windows on walkways or balconies
Bungalows, where every room is on the ground floor
Patio, French and kitchen doors
Ground-floor windows at the back of the house

Things to decide before you order

Escape from bedrooms

Grilles over bedroom and upstairs windows need a release that opens from inside without a key.

Which openings first

Start with the most hidden and easiest openings, usually at the back and side.

Rules that apply in England

England

Grilles inside the glass

A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

Grilles in rented homes

Landlords in England must keep rented homes free from serious hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, which includes fire. A grille that stops a tenant using an escape window can create a hazard, so grilles in rented homes should have keyless internal releases.

Home security grilles in Shrewsbury: questions

Do you cover Wellington as well as Shrewsbury?

Yes. As well as Shrewsbury, we can arrange surveys in nearby Wellington, Telford and Oswestry, and elsewhere in Shropshire.

Can grilles be fitted in a rented home?

Tenants need the landlord's permission. Landlords should make sure escape routes stay usable for tenants.

Do home security grilles look like prison bars?

Not when they are fitted inside the glass in a matching colour. Folded back, a grille is a slim stack at the side of the window.

Do I need planning permission for grilles on my house?

Internal grilles usually do not need planning permission. External grilles, listed homes and homes in conservation areas may need consent, so we check first.
