A hinged security gate is a steel bar gate hung on its own welded frame in front of or behind a door. It swings open and closed like a second door and locks with a heavy-duty lock box, making it a strong choice for back doors, plant rooms and service entrances.
Choices you can make
- Lock box with cylinder operable from one or both sides
- Hold-open hooks or stays
- Galvanised and powder-coated for external use
- Welded steel frame fixed into the opening
- Panic or push-to-exit hardware options for escape routes
- Mesh infill option for anti-reach-through

Greater Manchester is dominated by red-brick terraces and mill-town centres, with converted mills, modern city-centre flats and large retail parks.
Typical places for this kind of grille include:
- Plant rooms and bin stores
- Rear doors where wall space is limited
- Gated recesses and alleys
- Flat entrance doors
Things to decide before you order
Escape route
If the gate is on an exit route, consider escape hardware or a management plan so it is never locked while people are inside.
Swing direction
The gate needs clear space to open. We check steps, bins and the door's own swing before deciding which way it hangs.
Rules that apply in England
Grilles across exits in business premises
In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.

Hinged security gates in Walkden: questions
Do you cover Farnworth as well as Walkden?
Yes. As well as Walkden, we can arrange surveys in nearby Farnworth, Swinton and Tyldesley, and elsewhere in Greater Manchester.
Is a hinged gate stronger than a retractable grille?
A well-made hinged gate is very strong because it has a rigid frame and solid bars. Retractable grilles trade a little rigidity for the ability to fold away.
How long do hinged gates take to make?
Each gate is made to measure after the survey. We confirm the lead time with your quote.
Can a hinged gate be used on a fire exit?
Only if it does not prevent escape while the building is occupied, for example with push-to-exit hardware or by being unlocked and fixed open during opening hours.
