Mesh infill

Bars alone may let someone reach through to a handle or lock. Mesh infill closes that gap.

Escape route

If the gate is on an exit route, consider escape hardware or a management plan so it is never locked while people are inside.

What the rules say in England

England

Grilles across exits in business premises

In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.

External grilles and planning

External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.

Hinged security gates in South Croydon: questions

Which areas near South Croydon do you cover?

We can arrange work in South Croydon and in nearby Croydon (1 mile), Purley (2 miles) and Wallington (3 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

Is a hinged gate stronger than a retractable grille?

A well-made hinged gate is very strong because it has a rigid frame and solid bars. Retractable grilles trade a little rigidity for the ability to fold away.

How long do hinged gates take to make?

Each gate is made to measure after the survey. We confirm the lead time with your quote.

Can you make a double gate?

Yes. Wide doorways can take a pair of gates or one large and one small leaf.
