Fitting in Chippenham and nearby
Chippenham is about 16 miles from Swindon, the main centre for Wiltshire. We can survey and fit across the SN15 district and in nearby places such as Calne and Melksham.
Wiltshire mixes Swindon's Victorian railway terraces and modern estates with stone-built market towns such as Salisbury, Chippenham and Devizes.
This type of grille suits:
- French doors to gardens
- Dining rooms and kitchens
- Ground-floor flats
- Period homes with timber French doors
Questions we will ask at the survey
Curtains and blinds
Stack positions are planned around curtain tracks and returns.
Door swing
Inward-opening doors need the grille set back far enough to clear the leaves.
Planning and safety in England
Bedroom and escape windows
Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

French door grilles in Chippenham: questions
Can you survey in Chippenham and nearby towns?
Yes. Surveys in Chippenham, Calne, Melksham and elsewhere in Wiltshire are booked around installer availability.
Can French door grilles open one side only?
Yes. Each leaf runs independently, so you can open one side and leave the other closed.
My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?
Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.
Do French door grilles need a floor track?
Usually a low-profile one, which keeps the grille rigid and is easy to step over.
