How much should I budget for French door grilles in Wednesbury?
Budget £954 to £2,034 including VAT (£795 to £1,695 plus VAT) per pair of doors for French door grilles in Wednesbury, supplied and fitted. Size, number of leaves, colour and access all move the price, which is fixed in writing after the survey.
French door grilles are usually a pair of retractable grilles that fold to each side of the doors and meet in the centre, where they lock together. They protect the glazing and the meeting stiles, which are the weak point of many French doors.

Fitting in Wednesbury and nearby
Wednesbury is about 7 miles from Birmingham, the main centre for West Midlands. We can survey and fit across the WS10 district and in nearby places such as Tipton and West Bromwich.
The West Midlands is dominated by red-brick terraces and interwar semis, with dense high streets and a large stock of industrial and trade units.
Where French door grilles are most often used:
- French doors to gardens
- Juliet balconies on upper floors (with escape in mind)
- Ground-floor flats
- Period homes with timber French doors
What to think about first
Upper floors
A grille behind Juliet balcony doors needs to keep any required escape route usable.
Door swing
Inward-opening doors need the grille set back far enough to clear the leaves.
Consents and safety: England
Bedroom and escape windows
Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

Do French door grilles need a floor track?
Usually a low-profile one, which keeps the grille rigid and is easy to step over.
