How much do French door grilles cost in South Shields?
Most French door grilles in South Shields fall within £954 to £2,034 including VAT (£795 to £1,695 plus VAT) per pair of doors for supply and fitting. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey, before anything is ordered.
French door grilles are usually a pair of retractable grilles that fold to each side of the doors and meet in the centre, where they lock together. They protect the glazing and the meeting stiles, which are the weak point of many French doors.
Choices you can make
- Matches white, black or wood-effect frames
- Optional shoot bolts top and bottom
- Small stacks at each side of the doors
- Set back to clear inward-opening doors
- Pair of leaves meeting at a central lock
- Locks keyed alike with other grilles in the house

Things to decide before you order
Upper floors
A grille behind Juliet balcony doors needs to keep any required escape route usable.
One side or both
A centre-meeting pair lets you open one side for everyday use.
Rules that apply in England
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character, which can include internal grilles and their fixings. In conservation areas, councils look closely at anything fitted to the outside. We recommend speaking to the council's conservation officer before ordering.

French door grilles in South Shields: questions
Do you cover Tynemouth as well as South Shields?
Yes. As well as South Shields, we can arrange surveys in nearby Tynemouth, North Shields and Jarrow, and elsewhere in Tyne and Wear.
How long does it take to fit?
Usually two to three hours once the grilles arrive.
My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?
Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.
Can French door grilles open one side only?
Yes. Each leaf runs independently, so you can open one side and leave the other closed.
