French door grilles in Canterbury: what will it cost?

Most French door grilles in Canterbury fall within £954 to £2,034 including VAT (£795 to £1,695 plus VAT) per pair of doors for supply and fitting. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey, before anything is ordered.

French door grilles are usually a pair of retractable grilles that fold to each side of the doors and meet in the centre, where they lock together. They protect the glazing and the meeting stiles, which are the weak point of many French doors.

Specification at a glance

  • Small stacks at each side of the doors
  • Set back to clear inward-opening doors
  • Matches white, black or wood-effect frames
  • Locks keyed alike with other grilles in the house
  • Each side opens independently
  • Low-profile floor track

Fitting in Canterbury and nearby

Whether you are in central Canterbury or at the edge of the CT1 district, we can arrange a survey. Nearby Whitstable and Herne Bay are covered too.

Kent ranges from Medway's Victorian terraces and Thanet's seaside towns to listed medieval centres such as Canterbury and Rochester.

Common openings for French door grilles:

  • Ground-floor flats
  • Juliet balconies on upper floors (with escape in mind)

Inward-opening doors need the grille set back far enough to clear the leaves.

What the rules say in England

England

Bedroom and escape windows

Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.

Grilles inside the glass

A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

French door grilles in Canterbury: questions

Can you survey in Canterbury and nearby towns?

Yes. Surveys in Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay and elsewhere in Kent are booked around installer availability.

How long does it take to fit?

Usually two to three hours once the grilles arrive.

My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?

Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.

Can French door grilles open one side only?

Yes. Each leaf runs independently, so you can open one side and leave the other closed.
