Greater Glasgow is known for sandstone tenements with ground-floor shops, Victorian city-centre buildings and Inverclyde's riverside towns.
Typical places for this kind of grille include:
- Ground-floor flats
- Dining rooms and kitchens
- French doors to gardens
- Juliet balconies on upper floors (with escape in mind)
Things to decide before you order
Upper floors
A grille behind Juliet balcony doors needs to keep any required escape route usable.
One side or both
A centre-meeting pair lets you open one side for everyday use.
Rules that apply in Scotland
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Listed buildings in Scotland need listed building consent for works affecting their character, decided by the council, with Historic Environment Scotland consulted on some cases. Conservation areas bring extra scrutiny of external changes. Check with the council before ordering.
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission in Scotland, as it does not materially change the outside of the building. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

French door grilles in Bearsden: questions
Can you survey in Bearsden and nearby towns?
Yes. Surveys in Bearsden, Clydebank, Renfrew and elsewhere in Glasgow and Clyde are booked around installer availability.
Can French door grilles open one side only?
Yes. Each leaf runs independently, so you can open one side and leave the other closed.
Will the grille match my doors?
We powder-coat grilles in white, black, anthracite or a RAL colour close to your frames.
My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?
Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.
