How much should I budget for French door grilles in Bedford?
French door grilles in Bedford typically cost £954 to £2,034 including VAT (£795 to £1,695 plus VAT) per pair of doors, supplied and fitted. Use the quote tool for a guide figure, then we survey and confirm a fixed price.
French door grilles are usually a pair of retractable grilles that fold to each side of the doors and meet in the centre, where they lock together. They protect the glazing and the meeting stiles, which are the weak point of many French doors.
Choices you can make
- Pair of leaves meeting at a central lock
- Optional shoot bolts top and bottom
- Each side opens independently
- Low-profile floor track
- Small stacks at each side of the doors
- Locks keyed alike with other grilles in the house
Fitting in Bedford and nearby
We can arrange French door grilles anywhere in Bedford, and in nearby Ampthill, St Neots and Rushden. Tell us your postcode and we will offer dates.
Bedfordshire runs from Victorian terraces in Bedford and Luton to large post-war estates and new-build edges around Leighton Buzzard, with busy retail parades in every town centre.
Where French door grilles are most often used:
- Ground-floor flats
- Period homes with timber French doors
- French doors to gardens
- Juliet balconies on upper floors (with escape in mind)
What to think about first
Upper floors
A grille behind Juliet balcony doors needs to keep any required escape route usable.
Curtains and blinds
Stack positions are planned around curtain tracks and returns.
Consents and safety: England
Bedroom and escape windows
Approved Document B (fire safety) expects many habitable rooms in houses, especially first-floor rooms, to have an emergency escape window with an unobstructed opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a release that opens from inside without a key.
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission, because it does not materially change how the building looks from outside. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

French door grilles in Bedford: questions
Which areas near Bedford do you cover?
We can arrange work in Bedford and in nearby Ampthill (8 miles), St Neots (10 miles) and Rushden (12 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.
Do French door grilles need a floor track?
Usually a low-profile one, which keeps the grille rigid and is easy to step over.
My French doors open inwards. Can I still have a grille?
Yes. The grille is set back from the doors so they can swing open, or fitted outside if there is no room inside.
Will the grille match my doors?
We powder-coat grilles in white, black, anthracite or a RAL colour close to your frames.
