How much should I budget for fixed window grilles and bars in Nairn?
Most fixed window grilles and bars in Nairn fall within £234 to £714 including VAT (£195 to £595 plus VAT) per window for supply and fitting. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey, before anything is ordered.
A fixed window grille is a welded steel frame of bars bolted permanently over or inside a window. It has no moving parts and no lock to pick, which makes it the simplest and most economical grille for openings that are never used for access or escape.
What you can specify
- No lock to maintain
- Bar spacing chosen to stop entry while keeping light
- Anti-tamper bolts or resin anchors into masonry
- Internal or external fixing
- Welded steel frame with vertical bars or a grid
- Decorative bar patterns available for visible elevations

We arrange surveys and fitting in Nairn and across the IV12 postcode district, as well as in nearby Inverness (15 miles) and Dingwall (21 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.
The Highlands are one of the most sparsely populated parts of the UK, with Inverness as the main centre and many remote homes, holiday lets and small-town shops.
Where fixed window grilles and bars are most often used:
- Toilet and utility windows
- Rear storerooms and plant rooms
- Commercial back elevations
- Basement and cellar windows
What to think about first
Inside or outside
Inside fixing keeps the grille away from weather and tampering. Outside fixing suits windows with no internal access or depth.
Never needed for escape
A fixed grille should only go on a window that is not needed as an escape route. Bedrooms and upstairs habitable rooms usually need an openable alternative.
Consents and safety: Scotland
Bedroom and escape windows
In Scotland, escape from homes is covered by the Building Standards technical handbooks (section 2, fire). Where a room relies on a window for escape, nothing fitted over it should stop it being used. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a keyless internal release.
External grilles and planning
External grilles and shutters on commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the council under the Scottish planning system. Councils' shopfront guidance commonly prefers internal, open-mesh security, particularly in conservation areas and town centres.

Fixed window grilles and bars in Nairn: questions
Do you cover Inverness as well as Nairn?
Yes. As well as Nairn, we can arrange surveys in nearby Inverness, Dingwall and Elgin, and elsewhere in Highland.
Can fixed grilles be removed later?
Yes, by unbolting them from inside, though anti-tamper fixings are deliberately awkward to remove.
Will fixed bars rust?
Galvanised and powder-coated steel is designed for years of outdoor use. Chips in the coating should be touched up to keep the protection intact.
How are fixed grilles attached?
With anti-tamper bolts or resin anchors into solid masonry, or to a steel subframe where the wall is weak. Fixings are positioned so they cannot be reached from outside.
