Fixed window grilles and bars in Derry

What is the price of fixed window grilles and bars in Derry?

Budget £234 to £714 including VAT (£195 to £595 plus VAT) per window for fixed window grilles and bars in Derry, supplied and fitted. Size, number of leaves, colour and access all move the price, which is fixed in writing after the survey.

A fixed window grille is a welded steel frame of bars bolted permanently over or inside a window. It has no moving parts and no lock to pick, which makes it the simplest and most economical grille for openings that are never used for access or escape.

Choices you can make

Bar spacing chosen to stop entry while keeping light
Anti-tamper bolts or resin anchors into masonry
Internal or external fixing
Made to measure for arched and odd-shaped openings
Welded steel frame with vertical bars or a grid
No lock to maintain

Fitting in Derry and nearby

We arrange surveys and fitting across Derry and the BT48 postcode district, and in nearby Strabane (13 miles), Limavady (15 miles) and Coleraine.

County Londonderry centres on Derry's walled city and Victorian streets, with Coleraine and Limavady further east.

This type of grille suits:

Rear storerooms and plant rooms
Toilet and utility windows

Questions we will ask at the survey

Inside or outside

Inside fixing keeps the grille away from weather and tampering. Outside fixing suits windows with no internal access or depth.

Finish

External grilles last longest when hot-dip galvanised and then powder-coated.

Planning and safety in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland

Bedroom and escape windows

Fire safety in new building work in Northern Ireland is covered by the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 and Technical Booklet E. Where a room relies on a window for escape, nothing fitted over it should stop it being used. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a keyless internal release.

External grilles and planning

Planning in Northern Ireland is handled by the eleven councils. External grilles and shutters on commercial buildings normally need planning permission, and councils generally prefer internal, see-through security in town centres.

Fixed window grilles and bars in Derry: questions

Do you cover Strabane as well as Derry?

Yes. As well as Derry, we can arrange surveys in nearby Strabane, Limavady and Coleraine, and elsewhere in County Londonderry.

Do fixed grilles need planning permission?

Internal fixed grilles usually do not. External grilles on front elevations, listed buildings or in conservation areas may need consent, so we check before ordering.

Can fixed bars go on a bedroom window?

Generally no. Bedroom and upstairs habitable room windows often need to work as escape windows, so they should have an openable grille with a keyless internal release.

Can fixed grilles be removed later?

Yes, by unbolting them from inside, though anti-tamper fixings are deliberately awkward to remove.
