An escape window grille is a retractable grille with a release on the inside that opens it without a key or tool. It secures a window against entry from outside while keeping the window usable as an emergency escape route from inside, which bedroom and upstairs windows often need to be.

Fitting in St Andrews and nearby
St Andrews is about 31 miles from Dunfermline, the main centre for Fife. We can survey and fit across the KY16 district and in nearby places such as Cupar and Dundee.
Fife combines Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy's town centres with historic St Andrews and the stone-built villages of the East Neuk.
Typical places for this kind of grille include:
- Bedroom windows in houses and bungalows
- Rooms in HMOs and rented homes
- Loft conversion windows
- Basement bedrooms
Things to decide before you order
Clear opening
The folded grille must not reduce the window's clear opening below what escape requires.
Children
Discuss the release position with us if young children use the room.
Rules that apply in Scotland
Bedroom and escape windows
In Scotland, escape from homes is covered by the Building Standards technical handbooks (section 2, fire). Where a room relies on a window for escape, nothing fitted over it should stop it being used. We only fit grilles over escape windows with a keyless internal release.
Grilles in rented homes
Private landlords in Scotland must meet the repairing standard, which includes fire safety provisions. Grilles over windows a tenant may need for escape should open from inside without a key.

Escape window grilles (quick release) in St Andrews: questions
Do you cover Cupar as well as St Andrews?
Yes. As well as St Andrews, we can arrange surveys in nearby Cupar, Dundee and Leven, and elsewhere in Fife.
How does a quick-release grille work?
A lever or push release on the inside of the lock box unlatches the grille so it can be slid open in one movement, with no key needed.
Do landlords need escape grilles?
Landlords must keep escape routes usable for tenants. A key-only grille over a bedroom escape window is a fire hazard, so a quick-release grille is the safer choice.
Could a burglar use the quick release?
It should not be possible from outside. The release is on the inside face and positioned so it is not reachable through the lattice from outside; we check this at fitting.
