Fitting in South Shields and nearby

South Shields is about 7 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, the main centre for Tyne and Wear. We can survey and fit across the NE33 district and in nearby places such as Tynemouth and North Shields.

Tyne and Wear is known for Tyneside flats and brick terraces, Newcastle's listed Grainger Town, and large retail and office centres.

This type of grille suits:

Glazed kitchen and utility doors
Office side entrances
Back and side doors of houses
Shop back doors and fire exits (with the right arrangements)

Questions we will ask at the survey

Fire exits

On business premises a gate across an exit must not obstruct escape while anyone is inside. We discuss how it will be managed before recommending one.

Floor track

A full track gives the most rigid gate. If the doorway is a busy route or has level access, ask for a low-profile or recessed track.

Planning and safety in England

England

Grilles in rented homes

Landlords in England must keep rented homes free from serious hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, which includes fire. A grille that stops a tenant using an escape window can create a hazard, so grilles in rented homes should have keyless internal releases.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character, which can include internal grilles and their fixings. In conservation areas, councils look closely at anything fitted to the outside. We recommend speaking to the council's conservation officer before ordering.

Door security gates in South Shields: questions

Which areas near South Shields do you cover?

We can arrange work in South Shields and in nearby Tynemouth (1 mile), North Shields (1 mile) and Jarrow (2 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

Can you fit a gate to a flat entrance door?

Yes, subject to the building owner's permission and any fire strategy for the block, as flat entrance doors in shared buildings often have a fire safety role.

Will a gate stop the door from opening?

No. The gate is measured so the door can open and close normally with the gate folded back or swung open.

How do I lock a door gate?

With a key-operated lock box on the closing edge, plus shoot bolts on wider gates. Thumb-turn and quick-release options are available on the inside face.
