How much should I budget for counter and hatch grilles in Newtown?
Budget £595 to £1,795 plus VAT (£714 to £2,154 inc VAT) per hatch for counter and hatch grilles in Newtown, supplied and fitted. Size, number of leaves, colour and access all move the price, which is fixed in writing after the survey.
A counter or hatch grille is a small roller or retractable grille that closes off a serving hatch, kiosk window, bar or reception counter. It secures the opening between the public side and the stock or till behind, while staying compact enough for tight spaces.
Choices you can make
- Retractable options where there is side space
- Stainless or aluminium to suit food areas
- Compact coil boxes for low heads
- Brushed, anodised or powder-coated finishes
- Fixing to counters, bulkheads or subframes
- Neat integration with countertops
Fitting in Newtown and nearby
Surveys in Newtown (SY16) are booked around installer availability, as they are in nearby Welshpool (12 miles) and Llandrindod Wells (19 miles).
Powys is the most rural part of Wales, with stone-built market towns such as Brecon, Newtown and Llandrindod Wells and many remote properties.
Where counter and hatch grilles are most often used:
- Ticket and reception counters
- School and canteen serveries
- Takeaway and café hatches
- Bars and kiosks
What to think about first
Fire separation
If the hatch is in a fire-resisting wall, a standard grille does not replace a fire shutter.
Food areas
Smooth, cleanable finishes suit kitchens and serveries.
Consents and safety: Wales
Grilles across exits in business premises
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies in Wales, including to the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs. The responsible person must keep escape routes and exits available and easy to open while people are present, so a grille across an exit should be open whenever the premises are occupied.
Grilles inside the glass
A grille fitted inside the glass does not normally need planning permission in Wales, as it does not materially change the outside of the building. If the building is listed, listed building consent may still be needed.

Counter and hatch grilles in Newtown: questions
Can you survey in Newtown and nearby towns?
Yes. Surveys in Newtown, Welshpool, Llandrindod Wells and elsewhere in Powys are booked around installer availability.
Can you fit it into an existing counter?
Yes, by fixing to the counter structure or a subframe built into it.
Can a hatch grille be fire rated?
A standard security grille is not fire rated. If the hatch needs fire separation, a fire-rated shutter is required instead.
Will the grille fit under our ceiling?
Compact roller grilles need only a small box. If there is no head space, a retractable grille that folds to the side works instead.
