Getting the right commercial grille for your building

Escape routes

Grilles across exits must be managed so they never obstruct escape while people are inside.

Landlord consent

Leased premises usually need the landlord's agreement for fixings and alterations.

What the rules say in England

England

Grilles across exits in business premises

In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.

Insurer requirements

Insurers set their own conditions for business premises, stock and cash. If your policy names a type or rating of grille, get the wording in writing before ordering; the insurer decides whether a product meets it.

Commercial security grilles in Yeadon: questions

Do you cover Guiseley as well as Yeadon?

Yes. As well as Yeadon, we can arrange surveys in nearby Guiseley, Shipley and Pudsey, and elsewhere in West Yorkshire.

Can grilles go across fire exits?

Only if they do not obstruct escape while the building is occupied. That usually means they are unlocked and parked open during working hours and locked only when the building is empty.

Do we need the landlord's permission?

If you lease the building, usually yes, because grilles are fixed to the structure.

Can you meet our insurer's requirements?

Send us the insurer's wording and we will quote to it. The insurer decides whether a product meets the policy.
