What to think about first

Escape routes

Grilles across exits must be managed so they never obstruct escape while people are inside.

Insurance

Check whether your insurer has specific security requirements before choosing products.

External grilles and planning

External grilles and shutters on shops and other commercial buildings normally need planning permission from the local council because they change the building's appearance. Many councils' shopfront guides favour internal, open-lattice grilles, particularly in conservation areas.

Grilles across exits in business premises

In workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and HMOs, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person keep escape routes and emergency exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be unlocked and parked open whenever the building is occupied, and covered in the fire risk assessment.

Commercial security grilles in Boston: questions

Do you cover Spalding as well as Boston?

Yes. As well as Boston, we can arrange surveys in nearby Spalding, Sleaford and Skegness, and elsewhere in Lincolnshire.

Can grilles go across fire exits?

Only if they do not obstruct escape while the building is occupied. That usually means they are unlocked and parked open during working hours and locked only when the building is empty.

Can you meet our insurer's requirements?

Send us the insurer's wording and we will quote to it. The insurer decides whether a product meets the policy.

Can all our grilles use one key?

Yes. Locks can be keyed alike or supplied on a master-key suite.
