What the rules say in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Listed buildings in Northern Ireland need listed building consent for works affecting their character, with the council deciding and the Department for Communities' Historic Environment Division advising. Conservation areas bring extra scrutiny of external changes.

Grilles across exits in business premises

The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 make the appropriate person keep escape routes and exits available and easy to open while people are present. A grille across an exit should be open whenever the premises are occupied.

Commercial security grilles in Lurgan: questions

Can you survey in Lurgan and nearby towns?

Yes. Surveys in Lurgan, Craigavon, Portadown and elsewhere in County Armagh are booked around installer availability.

Can you meet our insurer's requirements?

Send us the insurer's wording and we will quote to it. The insurer decides whether a product meets the policy.

Can grilles go across fire exits?

Only if they do not obstruct escape while the building is occupied. That usually means they are unlocked and parked open during working hours and locked only when the building is empty.

Can you work outside office hours?

Out-of-hours fitting can usually be arranged; the installer's availability is confirmed when you book.
